Quick Search Engine Tips

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the art of tailoring a website so that it will rank high in search engines for a certain set of search terms, commonly known as keywords. It is an elaborate and detailed skill, that can only be developed over time. However, for business owners that have just recently started a website, here are a few quick tips for getting off to a good start:

  1. Describe your business concisely - write up a 25 word description of your business, that really nails what you do and what your company is all about. This can be used by search engines as a teaser to drive vistors to your site.
  2. Identify Keywords - determine what words potential visitors will use to find your business in search engines. Strive to create rich content on your site that uses these words appropriately, helping to increase your search engine rank for these terms.
  3. Get Listed - submit your URL and site description to the major search engines (Yahoo, Google, MSN, AOL, Altavista), and especially DMOZ.org. Because DMOZ is a human-edited directory, other search engines (like Google) weigh links on this site very heavily.
  4. Link and Be Linked - network with partner websites and share links with sites of similar content. This strengthens the context of your website's context, fosters more paths to your site, and ultimately leads to better rankings.
  5. Get Creative! - brainstorm ways that you can provide free services on your website. Or offer special promotions, and pass this highly valuable information on to other sites in your network. Your affiliates will love to have "the inside scoop" on your latest promotion, and can help drive traffic to your site. This additional links result in added visibility and a higher chance for success!
